About Temple
Nandagiri Lord Sri Veerabhadra Swamy Temple
The temple is dedicated to Lord Sri Veerabhadra Swamy, a fierce and powerful incarnation of Lord Shiva, and is considered one of the most important piligrimage sites for devotees of Lord Shiva
Lord Sri Virabhadra Swamy Temple at Nandagiri is one of the temples built under the patronage of the Kakatiyas, who were strong followers of Saivism and constructed several Sivalayas.
The temple structure consists of:
Ø A garbhagriha (sanctum)
Ø A small antarala (vestibule)
Ø A sixteen-pillared mandapa, facing north
The main deity, Lord Sri Virabhadra Swamy, is installed in the garbhagriha. The idol has four hands:
- Upper hands hold damaru (drum) and trishula (trident)
- Lower right hand holds a khadga (sword)
- Lower left hand is in varada mudra (blessing posture)
Additional features:
1. A shrine of Raja Rajeswara Swamy (Shiva Linga) is located to the west of the mandapa
2. The temple has a parapet wall surrounding the mandapa
3. The base (adhisthana) is decorated with four-petalled lotus motifs
4. A Chalukyan-style Nandi is present in front of the temple, with a recently built four-pillared mandapa over it
5. A Nandi stambha (pillar) stands in the courtyard, which once supported a miniature Nandi mandapa (now lost)
